The Bird

It all began on that morning. Many years ago, one day like all the others, Birdie left home early and started walking to school. She was a simple girl who had a simple life, which could be condensed into this: At an early age, she had moved to the yellow house near the shore with her father, a renowned zoologist and birdwatcher. Aside from the many things she learned in that house, a very special part of her daily routine was walking to school using the route along the shore. Of course, she could never have known that this love of hers was going to be the reason for the biggest passion of her life, too.

One day, as she was watching birds flying in the sky and diving into the ocean, she heard a humming noise. It was a very cloudy and misty morning and she wasn’t able to see where the sound was coming from, at first. But then, from the point where the sun was hiding behind the gray clouds, three airplanes emerged.

It was hard to see, but Birdie followed them with her eyes as the metal, bulky birds flew into and out of the gray clouds, their color harmonizing so beautifully with the sky. Hearing the gulls cry and the motors hum at the same time, she was mesmerized by this grayscale reflection of a dream. And it dawned on her.

“I love watching birds so much..,” Birdie thought. “Why did I never dream about this before? Why do I not fly among them..?” Everything at that moment was like a dream to her senses; the colors, the sounds, and the tickling sensation she started to feel in her heart. Or so did it feel when she looked back now. But whatever it was, it was certainly magic, because she was so startled at how she could not discover her dream until that day. Yes, it had to be this: a discovery. Because it was always inside her, waiting to be woken up.

And perhaps because of that amazement of hers, she didn’t even hear herself when she whispered, still gazing at the planes that were reflected on her sparkling eyes, “I will fly…”

“We will need your portrait for official documentation, miss…” Was it only pride that made her dizzy on her first day as an aviatrix? Or was there so much more than that, a very deep kind of fulfillment and peace, known to only those who get to find their true calling?

Her beloved companion… This was her… Finally… From the first moment Birdie saw her, she knew her name was going to be Grace. They were going to have so many adventures with Grace, and there was also this buzzing certainty deep inside her heart. Grace, Gracie was going to protect her from harm up above.

This moment was so different, Grace was so different from all those aircrafts she saw that day, many years ago, on the shore. But she felt these two moments were connected, they were locked – one was when a dream was born, the other it was realized. But Grace was different…

“ Look at her, she is like sunshine! Bright, warm… And we belong together, don’t we, Gracie? ”
